I: Latest Covid update In the past week a heavily mutated Covid variant has been identified, rapidly labelled a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization and named Omicron. Eleven cases of the Omicron variant have been found in the UK so far. It is unclear how big a threat it poses. Health Secretary Sajid Javid said it could be the most infectious variant so far. What we know is Omicron has mutations that theoretically help it to spread more quickly and there is mounting evidence of that happening in South Africa.  The Government's response is to test everyone coming into the UK, isolate all Omicron contacts, ramp up boosting and bring back compulsory face masks in some public places. I: Roadmap  Infection levels have been rising recently. So far The Government have no agenda to move to its stricter Plan B. The Government’s current focus is to offer booster jabs and get more young people, including 12-15 year olds, vaccinated.  What could trigger Plan B? I: Restrictions  I.I Tier review Health Secretary Matt Hancock has confirmed Birmingham remains in Tier 3   I:II Christmas Bubble The Government has issued guidance that will apply to the 5-day Christmas Bubble period. We have inserted this into our Christmas period table.  PM Johnson stressed that 3 households mixing for 5 days are maximum limits, not targets; he urged people to do the minimum possible in order to reduce transmission. He also advised people to start reducing their contacts 5 days before Christmas ie from this weekend.  Restrictions 17.12.2020 – 27.12.2020 The Tiers will be reviewed every 14 days - the first review took place on 16.12.2020. How does the new Alert System work? An area is put into Tier 2 High Alert when ‘case rates’ go above 100. If Tier 2 measures fail to bring case rates below 100, the area is put up to Tier 3 Very High Alert level. It is important to be aware that case rates are not the same as the actual rates. With exceptions explained previously, you are not allowed to have visitors in your house or garden, and you are not allowed to enter other people’s houses or gardens wherever they live.
