I. Key messages and update On Thursday 27 January, England returned to Plan A measures following the huge success of the vaccination programme and falling Omicron infections. Most of the rules in place under Plan B have ended: Work from home guidance has been dropped Face masks are no longer compulsory (although some shops have asked customers to keep wearing them and they are required by Transport for London) Covid passes are no longer compulsory at venues and events From Monday 31 January: In care homes there will be no limit to visitor numbers, self-isolation periods will be cut and rules for managing outbreaks will be eased II. I: Latest Covid update In the past week a heavily mutated Covid variant has been identified, rapidly labelled a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization and named Omicron. Eleven cases of the Omicron variant have been found in the UK so far. It is unclear how big a threat it poses. Health Secretary Sajid Javid said it could be the most infectious variant so far. What we know is Omicron has mutations that theoretically help it to spread more quickly and there is mounting evidence of that happening in South Africa.  The Government's response is to test everyone coming into the UK, isolate all Omicron contacts, ramp up boosting and bring back compulsory face masks in some public places. Current situation On 19 July The Government has lifted the remaining Covid restrictions, social distancing, events and gatherings and travel in England.  Birmingham is one of the areas with high numbers of Indian/Delta variant cases There are 12 areas of England where the Delta variant is spreading quickly. Birmingham is on the list. The government says if you live in one of these areas you should read local Covid-19 information and advice. I: Roadmap  The Government has pushed the roadmap date back by four weeks until 19 July over Delta variant fears.  It means we are still in step 3 and most remaining curbs on social contact will remain in force until 19th July.  Weddings and receptions can go ahead without a guest number cap; but venues may set limits based on social distancing requirements. Rules on singing and dancing will remain.
