I: Vaccination invitation letter 7 Mass Vaccination Centres opened across the country this week.  Birmingham has a centre at Millenium Point in Digbeth.  People aged 80+ should receive a letter inviting them to book an appointment for the Covid-19 vaccination.  The letter may come from their GP or the National Booking System.   Birmingham & Solihull CCG have created a website to provide information and answer questions –  https://www.birminghamandsolihullcovidvaccine.nhs.uk/ We have taken information from various local Public Health and NHS sources and put key points here:  You can choose whether to have your vaccination at Millenium Point or your GP surgery The Government has ordered 3 vaccines: Pfizer, AstroZeneca (‘Oxford’ vaccine), and Moderna You cannot choose which vaccine you get Vaccination is not compulsory but the NHS and Public Health…

I: National lockdown England has been placed into lockdown again. A summary table is below.  Other key points:  A free school meal system will be maintained for children from low income families The Government has pledged to provide devices and equipment to support learning for pupils from low income families  School exams have been cancelled for this year. The Education Secretary has confirmed that exams will be replaced with teacher assessments.  It is now against the law to leave home unless you have a specified reason. I: Tier 4 The Government today confirmed that Birmingham will move into Tier 4 at 00:01 tomorrow morning (Thursday 31st December).  Key changes:    II: Schools re-opening  Secondary schools Secondary schools will open as follows:  4th January – open for vulnerable children and children of key workers only 11th January – Years 11 & 13 (exam years) return  18th January – all other years  Primary schools  Primary schools will reopen on Monday 4th January. Universities  Only students who need to attend physical classes involving practical tasks in order to gain qualifications will return in January.  Schools and universities will introduce lateral flow tests.  III: AstroZeneca ‘Oxford’ vaccine approved  The Government approved the Oxford vaccine today. I: Christmas Bubbles – Revised  Covid-19 has a new variant. All viruses mutate so change was predictable and is nothing new.  According to Birmingham Director of Public Health Dr Justin Varney, there is currently no evidence that the effects of the new variant are worse or that the vaccine won’t work against it. However it appears to be highly transmissible.  The growth rate is doubling every 7 days in London/South East where 60-70% of cases are of the new variant.  For this reason the Government introduced a new Tier 4 which applies to London/South East from 20.12.2020.  In Tiers 1-3, changes have been made to the Christmas Bubbles policy.
