The objective of our health development services are to promote health, well being and to reduce health inequalities by raising awareness and understanding, prevention and managing conditions for health issues.

Services provided:

Our services within our Community Health Service department are free of charge for those who live in Birmingham, or who are registered with a Birmingham GP. There may be a charge for some of the services.

 

Health Development availability
Office hours: Monday to Friday 10:00 – 16:00

Monthly health forum – 1st Tuesday of every month
Mental health carers support meetings – 1st Thursday of every month
Urgent appointments available Tuesday, Thursday and Friday during office hours

Health Forum

Aim of project

To provide a learning and social platform for personal well-being.

Services provided

  • Relaxation exercises, blood pressure measurements and waist to hip ratio measurements
  • Talks with guest speakers and evaluation of impact on service users’ health
  • Walking group and table tennis

Outcomes
As a result of taking part in Forum activities, participants:

  • Are able to nurture their own health and well being through being better informed of personal health issues
  • Improve their physical strength and build confidence through making new friends and developing team working skills

Health Forum activities are free and open to all people as it is part of the Health Development Project.

Health Interpreting Service

Aim of project

To enable service users to access public health and social care through facilitating communication between service users and medical professionals. This project has assisted service users to:

  • Gain information about personal medical issues
  • Obtain professional advice on diagnosis and treatment
  • Manage their medication and understand their responsibilities as patients

Services provided

  • On site interpreting at hospital, GP surgery and treatment centre.
  • Telephone interpreting is available for dental practice and optician.
  • Charging policy for other non-health purposes remains the same.

Outcomes
As a result of utilising the Health Interpreting Service, participants can:

  • Gain information about personal medical issues
  • Obtain professional advice on diagnosis and treatment
  • Manage their medication and understand their responsibilities as patients

Mental Health Carers Support

Overall Aim of Project

This service provides a learning and social platform for those caring for someone with mental health conditions.  Caring for someone with mental health conditions often can be mentally exhausting and stressful and can impact the carers own well being.

Services provided

  • Confidential one to one support (Advocacy & Emotion)
  • Home visits
  • Outreach support (hospital, treatment centre etc.)
  • Referrals
  • Peers support group
  • Workshops (information, self-management skill, wellbeing activities etc.)

Outcomes
As a result of taking part in the activities, participants:

  • Can build resilience and confidence to deal with difficult situation and problem solving
  • Improve working relationship with medical professional
  • Understand the condition and treatment
  • Improve the relationship among family members
  • Establish and improve social life

 Mental Health Carers Support service is free for carers who care for someone with mental health issue, and live in the Birmingham area.
